Address Verification Service (AVS)
Address Verification is a service made available for transactions with Visa and MasterCard credit cards. It allows merchants to reduce their card-not-present risks by adding a layer of verification to their online transactions.
How it works:
- At the time of the transaction, the billing address entered by the customer is sent to Visa or MasterCard's address verification database.
- This billing address is checked against the address on file at the customer's card issuing bank, and a result is provided to the merchant.
- Merchants can than see the match response code and assess the risk-level of the transaction.
Card Verification Value (CVV2)
The Card Verification Value (CVV2) is a three to four digit security code that is printed on the back or front of most credit cards. The CVV2 program is designed to reduce fraud in the card-not-present environment by validating that a genuine credit card is being used during the transaction.
