Interac Direct Payment (IDP)

The Interac Association is a debit system of Canadian banks allowing merchants and customers to transfer funds directly from their bank accounts. In the Canadian retail card-present environment, over 80% of transactions and 50% of sales volume are performed over the Interac network through 320,000 merchants. This accounts for over 160 billion dollars in transaction volume each year.

Helcim retail and restaurant merchants using in-store terminals are automatically eligible to accept debit payment. Additional features can also be added to the debit processing service, such as enabling convience fees to be passed to customers.

Steps Involved in an Interac Transaction

1. When a customer decides to make a purchase through their debit bank card, the sale amount is entered in the point-of-sale terminal by the merchant.
2. Once the card is swiped, the customer enters their "Personal Identification Number (PIN)" into the reader. The account (whether chequing or savings) to be debited is then selected.
3. The transaction is transferred throughout the Interac network of banks where the customer's information is verified.
4. With the transaction processed successfully, a receipt is provided to the customer.
