Every merchant we've ever talked to has said some version of the same thing: they didn't expect their payment processor to be great. They just hoped it wouldn't screw them too badly.
That's not a bar. That's a complacency an entire industry taught good business owners to accept.
Today, we're evolving Helcim's brand. A sharper position, a stronger voice, and a bolder look. Our values haven't changed. What's changed is that we've finally built a product and a brand loud enough to stand behind them.
The industry trained merchants to settle
We spent months talking to the merchants we actually built this for: established business owners processing real volume, with real payroll and a real reputation, who've been open long enough to know better than to trust a sales pitch.
What we heard almost never started with rates. It started with frustration – and that frustration showed up the same way, over and over: a statement nobody can decipher, a "discount" you have to call and beg for every time you grow, a support line that puts you in a queue for a problem that's costing you money right now, hardware leases you can't get out of, tools that only work if you never leave their ecosystem.
“Helcim’s automatic volume discounts and transparent online pricing mean I don't have to fight for a better deal.” — Hai, Bucks Dental Clinic
“I don't like people lying to me... my old processor was aggravating. So I was looking for a new way.” — Alan, Bridgewater Motor Works
“Nobody acts like I'm a moron... that customer service is phenomenal.” — Karen, Charleston Healthcare
None of that is a pricing problem. It's a respect problem. And once we saw that clearly, we couldn't unsee it: the entire industry has spent decades getting business owners to lower their expectations, one hidden fee at a time, until "good enough" started to feel like the ceiling instead of the floor.
We don't think it should be that way. So we're finally ready to pick a fight with it.
Where Helcim stands
Helcim is the payment company that does not play games.
That's Helcim, in one line. We're not chasing "all-in-one." We're not chasing "growth and scale" as a slogan — every processor already says that. What almost none of them deliver is what merchants have told us matters more than any feature list: transparency and fairness, applied consistently, in every interaction you have with us.
We're building that promise on three pillars:
- Transparent pricing
- Open platform
- Real support
Transparent pricing means Interchange Plus rates and automatic volume discounts that kick in without a negotiation. No monthly fees, no hidden charges, and rates that keep working in a business owner's favor as they grow.
Open platform means your tools, your workflow, your choice. Our tools like the Helcim Payment Extension lets you keep the software you already run your business on while still choosing the best payment company for the job.
Real support means a dedicated success team and a public phone number reaching an actual human when you need help.
Crafting a voice to disrupt industry standards
Here's a distinction that mattered a lot to us while we were building this: there's a real difference between challenging an industry and just being loud for the sake of it.
We didn't want a brand that tears things down with no better alternative behind it. We also didn't want a brand that plays it so safe it just quietly follows industry norms because "that's how it's always been." That's how you end up training merchants to expect less in the first place.
So we're building Helcim up as a challenger: we call out the specific games the industry plays and we back every callout with a fairer, better alternative.
Provocative, not aggressive. Direct, not cruel. Tough love, because getting merchants unblocked matters more to us than being liked in the moment.
That's the personality behind everything we're putting into the world from here forward, and it's exactly what shaped how the brand looks now, too.
A new visual identity
Evolving our personality and internal voice made one thing clear: our visual identity needed to move with them. Our existing identity had drifted out of step with the new direction. Its heavy use of light, pastel colours made the brand feel soft and overly friendly, when what we wanted our visuals to convey was something more assertive, confident, and bold.
Exploring that new direction was a highly collaborative effort, bringing together the brand design team and marketing. Together we ran through the exercise of auditing what we had, identifying what no longer resonated, stripping those parts away, and combining what was left with new treatments.
Defining a recognizable signature
Beyond aligning the visual brand to our new personality, we saw an opportunity to make it tighter and more distinctive, and therefore easier to recognize.
Our existing visual brand stretched too wide. A sprawling colour palette led to too many possible solutions, which meant the same identity could show up in very different ways from one execution to the next. Over time, that inconsistency made the brand harder to recognize.
So the objective became to reimagine our visual identity to fit the new personality while making it feel more cohesive and ownable.
We did this through a connective tissue that shows up in a tighter, more distinctive colour palette, a unique lighting treatment for photography called chiaroscuro, and a memorable typeface that carries the message loud and clear. Together, these elements narrow the range of possible executions into a more deliberate visual output, one that over time builds a recognizable Helcim signature.
The outcome: a system built over 4 principles:
One of the most critical steps was translating our new personality traits into visual output. That thinking pointed us toward a visual language that reads as more intense, deep, bold, and authentic. We built the new system on these four principles, each one tied to a core brand token.
Intense → colour palette
The palette runs saturated, and the real energy comes from contrast. Bright accent hues reserved for typography set against deep blue or dark purple grounds. That collision between bright type and a dark background is what makes a creative feel loud and alive, conveying a sense of confidence and directness in our communication.
Deep → gradients and chiaroscuro

A brand that plays no games doesn't stay on the surface; it goes deeper. We do this by using light to shape both our gradients and our photography. Our gradients aren't colour blends, they're light in motion: each one mimics coloured light thrown into a dark space, bright where it starts and deep where it fades. Our photography uses chiaroscuro to the same effect, pushing light hard against dark to create depth and give every surface dimension.
Bold → typeface

Helcim Sans is blocky, distinctive, and unapologetically loud, built to make a statement, not just hold a headline. It's how we say who we are clearly enough that nobody has to guess. Everything else, body copy, supporting detail, runs in Red Hat, so it's clear which words are the statement and which are the support.
Authentic → photography

Our shots portray merchants caught in the flow of real work: unstaged, unpolished, unfiltered. The goal is to show the real face of a business rather than an idealized version built from staged, polished photos. That honesty reflects the transparency of our brand and our aim to build trust with our merchants.
What's next
You'll start seeing this identity roll out across our site, our product, and everywhere we show up publicly over the coming weeks. The colours will feel different. The tone will feel different. What won't change is the thing underneath it: we still think a lower rate means nothing if you can't trust the company quoting it, and we're still the payments company that refuses to play games with your business.
Good enough got you this far. We think you deserve better than that.
