At the 20th Calgary Reads Big Book Sale in 2024, over 175,000 gently used books of every genre imaginable awaited eager readers. This annual event, dedicated to raising funds for children's literacy programs, achieved its most successful year yet, thanks in part to Helcim's transaction processing rates.

Streamlining Payments for a Smooth Event

The Big Book Sale, stewarded by the Rotary Club of Calgary, needed a reliable and cost-effective payment processing solution to handle a high volume of transactions smoothly and efficiently. In previous years, they faced high transaction fees and administrative challenges.

    Solutions for Seamless Transactions

Helcim stepped in by providing loaned terminals and setting up a dedicated account for the event. The Helcim team also volunteered on-site to assist with processing sales, ensuring a seamless experience for both organizers and attendees.

    Record-Breaking Fundraising for Children’s Literacy

The event raised $571,750, marking its most successful year yet. Approximately $485,000 was processed through Helcim's Smart Terminals, saving the sale over $3,900 in transaction fees compared to the previous provider.

Directing More Funds to a Great Cause

With reduced fees, more money could be allocated to supporting children's literacy programs. Helcim's proactive support and cost-effective solutions were an important piece in achieving this milestone. "Helcim's support was invaluable in making our event a success. Their Smart Terminals processed transactions seamlessly and saved us significantly on fees, allowing more funds to go directly to children's literacy programs. The Helcim team went above and beyond: they were on-site when we experienced Wifi issues and volunteered to assist with sales, demonstrating their commitment to our cause." shared Tami Tranquada, Co-Chair of the Big Book Sale.

Creating Lasting Impact with Community Support

The funds raised at the sale will support Calgary Reads’ legacy seed partners who are working collaboratively to take an ecosystem approach to create urgency around the importance of investing in and understanding early literacy in Calgary. The funds also help provide all children with access to quality books, strong reading role models, and safe, cozy spaces that nurture a love of reading.

Easy and secure embeded payments with Helcim

"Every time you open a book and read with your child, you build brains and bonds. Reading aloud is a calming activity that brings the chance to grow vocabulary, empathy, problem-solving, and more. Children learn to read – and then they read to learn. That’s why we say books open the door to a lifetime of opportunity,"

Steacy Pinney, Early Childhood Literacy Director
    Rotary Club of Calgary

With Helcim's support, the Calgary Reads Big Book Sale continues to make a significant difference in the community, fostering a love of reading and providing vital resources to help children thrive.
